District residents and contractors do need a permit for most roof repairs, removals and replacements.
A Permit is required if:
- Metal flashing is to be removed, repaired or replaced.
- Re-roofing, roof repairs or replacement is involved and is not exempted by below:
A Building Permit is not required when an area of less than 100 square feet is being re-roofed or repaired and not more than two (2) layers of membrane or asphalt shingles are involved. If the roofing material is part of a Built Up Roof (BUR or torch down) roof system then the manufacture specifications must be followed.
No inspection of this work is required, however, all work must meet the requirements of the 2006 International Building (IBC) or Residential Building (IRC) codes and the manufacturers instructions. Note: This notice is clarifying Section 105.2.9.b of the 2006 and 2008 versions of the DCMR 12A supplement to the ICC codes.
